Hostelling International USA, Oregon Council
2009 not only marks the 100th Anniversary of the international hostelling movement and the 75th Anniversary of Hostelling International USA (formerly American Youth Hostels), it also is the 25th Anniversary of our HI-Portland, Hawthorne Hostel. Furthermore, the Oregon Council of Hostelling International USA has been welcoming the world to Oregon and Idaho for 30 years.
Now it’s time to celebrate these milestone anniversaries!
In honor of this momentous occasion, Congressman David Wu of Oregon gave a one-minute floor speech honoring the 75th anniversary of Hostelling International USA. It appeared in the Wednesday 7 January 2009 Congressional Record. His remarks cite the work of the HI-Oregon Council and include a poignant endorsement of the educational value of travel through a quote by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Hostelling is educational travel, local and global, using hostels and programs to facilitate interaction between travelers and community members, and to promote discover of local cultures, the world, and each other.
Hostelling strives for a peaceful world. HI-USA’s hostels and programs inspire global citizenship, cultural respect, world peace and understanding. From the friendly common rooms of hostels where people of varying backgrounds meet and form friendships, to community programs that encourage intercultural exchange, HI-USA is making a difference. Hostelling encourages environmental sustainability through its green practices and environmental education programs.
