Travel Workshops - World Travel 101

Travel Further, Cheaply, and Safely

World Travel 101 Budget Travel Workshop is geared toward the first-time traveler planning a trip abroad. This signature "international travel basics" workshop of Hostelling International USA has been offered to a variety of groups and individuals across the nation. Its curriculum is specifically designed as a "how-to" and confidently presented by veteran travelers.

This workshop provides an in-depth view of how to become a responsible traveler. Veteran travelers offer tips on everything from budgeting, packing, finding accommodations, managing health issues, cultural behavior, transportation, language barriers, getting the most out of your trip and more. Usually the workshop takes an hour to an hour and a half of interactive presentation. The following topics form the basis of this workshop:

  • Accommodations – Advance reservations and getting on-the-spot lodging.
  • Travel Documents – Documents you need to successfully travel from country to country, and others you simply want to have with you “just in case.” This session will also cover advance planning to assure you have your documents in time.
  • World Travel 101
  • Packing for Travel – Beyond “PACK LIGHT”: how to carry your stuff, what to take with you, and what not to take.
  • Safety – Medical and health issues, protecting your documents, and personal safety considerations.
  • Transportation – Transportation options for getting you to where you’re going as well as once you get there.
  • Money – How much will it cost? What form and how should you carry it? What about exchanging money?
  • Responsible Travel/Intercultural Education – Hostelling International philosophy of travel and how to be a true global citizen. Tips on how to travel with an open mind and heart.
  • Resources – Identify and review some resources for getting more information.

  • WT 101 is a resource workshop and admission is FREE. You can attend these workshops at some of local outdoor stores such as R.E.I. and universities such as University of Portland and Portland State University. Check our Events Calendar for our workshop schedule.
